Paul takes into account what Onesiphorus did for the ministry, so he prays that the Lord will give him mercy at "that day."  Whenever Paul mentions Christians being prepared for a certain "day," it is referring to the Judgment Seat of Christ.  Sooner or later, we will be judged by the Almighty and every secret act, good or bad, will be revealed.  It can be a day of terror to those who have failed in their work or it can be a day of gladness to people like Onesiphorus who have labored faithfully.  If your whole life was played back exposed in front of the whole audience, can you honestly feel confident of your efforts for God?  Onesiphorus was busy preparing for that judgment, but what about us? Since many today have been loafing, they will lose their clothes, treasures, crowns, reign, and inheritance.  But there are a few "Onesiphoruses" still working tirelessly for the Savior, and they will gain their rewards and ruling with Christ over cities and nations.  It will be a sorrowful sight to see literally thousands of Christians sacrificing the glorious riches of heaven for the corruptible pleasures of the world.  How I desire at the Judgment Seat of Christ to see the One Who died for me looking at my face with a smile and simply saying, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant."

2 Timothy 1:16-18
The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain: But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me. The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.
