Question: What is the speaking of tongues? Answer: It is speaking in different languages. For the apostles, it was a sign from the Holy Ghost that gave them the power to suddenly speak in different languages. Today that miracle no longer exists, however, many nationalities today can still speak in different languages without the intervention of the Spirit. Charismatics, Pentecostals, Episcopalians, and other denominations misunderstand the meaning of the tongues that they think it is some inaudible gibberish that is given by the Holy Ghost. They do not believe it is a human language, but rather some heavenly language that can only be understood by God and the people He communicates with. Their most popular text is perhaps Acts 2, where the disciples experienced the baptism of the Spirit and suddenly spoke in tongues during the day of Pentecost. But in that same chapter, the reader will easily recognize that the tongues are human languages. It will also be recognized when reading further into the entire book of Acts. It will also be recognized when reading the first book of the Bible. It will also be recognized when reading the last book of the Bible. It will also be recognized when searching every verse that mentions "tongue" in the entire Bible.
