Holiness - Christian Examiner (Part 5) PDF Print E-mail
The apostle Peter writes, “But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy” (1 Pet 1:15-16). This is the forgotten commandment today. Not only is our God is gracious, he is also pure, sinless, and undefiled and commands the same of us.

Holiness is connected to the word sanctified. Once something has been set apart (sanctified) for God’s exclusive use, it is then said to be “holy.” In the Old Testament some things were called holy: the rooms in the tabernacle (Ex 26:33), Aaron’s garments (Ex 28:2), etc. The scriptures themselves are even called holy (2 Tim 3:15), but you and I have to work at it! Charles Spurgeon once remarked, “Holiness is not the way to Christ, but Christ is the way to holiness.”  The Lord Jesus said, “He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit; for without me ye can do nothing” (John 15:5)

Some will protest that proclaiming holy standards, personal virtues, and righteous conduct amounts to some kind of “legalism.” Spoken like a true carnal Christian. They will remember that salvation is “by grace…through faith…not of works” (Eph 2:8-9), but then fail to notice verse 10, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus UNTO GOOD WORKS, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

Paul writes, “For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, BUT UNTO HOLINESS” (1 Thes 4:7)...

Water Baptism - Christian Examiner (Part 4)

Why is it that unbelievers grab hold of water baptism like thirsty men in the desert? Catholics, Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Church of Christ and countless others, teach it is necessary for one’s salvation. Mormons even say you ought to be baptized on behalf of your loved ones who died before Joseph Smith showed up in order to help bring them the "Restored" gospel. Water baptism would seem to be quite an agent to effect the new birth.

How is it then, that the greatest Christian who ever lived didn’t think so? The apostle Paul wrote that “Christ sent me NOT TO BAPTIZE, but to preach the gospel” (1 Cor 1:17). Then, in the same book he defined the gospel as the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ “according to the scriptures” (1 Cor 15:1-4) MINUS water baptism.

Righteousness - Christian Examiner (Part 3) PDF Print E-mail
Righteousness can be simply understood as the credit or merit for having “done right” in the past. Just as a man is called a “good man” who  practices “goodness.” The Jews told Moses “And it shall be OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS, if we observe to do all these commandments before the LORD our God, as he hath commanded us” (Deut 6:25).  The Bible states that John the Baptist’s parents “were both righteous before God,” How? “walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord...
Why the Lord Causes Storms (Part 1) PDF Print E-mail
This is Pastor Schreib preaching Why Lord Causes Storms on YouTube from Psalm 107

25: For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.
26: They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.
27: They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits' end.
28: Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.
29: He maketh the...
Speaking of Tongues (Part 1) PDF Print E-mail
Many Charismatics think that speaking in unknown tongues is blabbering words in a heavenly fashion to God.  That is wrong.  I Corinthians 14:9-11 clearly states that if no one understands what the speaker of the tongues had said, the hearer and the speaker are declared to be barbarians.  I Corinthians 14:13 and I Corinthians 14:27-28 clearly states that the speaking of tongues must be interpreted to the hearers.  Whenever you are going to speak in tongues at church, you have to interpret...
Repentance - Christian Examiner (Part 2) PDF Print E-mail
Most of us have heard the slogan, “God allows U-turns.” If the Lord God is holy, he has a right to expect us to be as well (see 1 Peter 1:15-16). The Bible states that the Apostle Paul was “testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 20:28).

Yet, the popular gospel that “God loves you just as you are,” is often taken to mean that God approves of you just as you are. He doesn’t. The message that your...
Speaking of Tongues (Part 2) PDF Print E-mail
A great number of Charismatics believe that I Corinthians 14:14 quotes, “For if I pray in an unknown tongue, the Holy Spirit prayeth, but I do not understand what I am saying.”  Using the verse this way supports their reason for the allowance of the speaker to talk in unknown tongues without understanding what he said at the same time.  But that is not what the verse said!
